Important Tax Dates to Know

Staying on top of tax deadlines is essential to avoid penalties and keep your finances in order. Below is a helpful guide to key tax dates for employees, retirees, self-employed individuals, independent contractors, and gig workers.
 

Key 2025 Tax Dates For Individuals
 

  • January 15, 2025 – 4th Quarter 2024 Estimated Tax Payment Due
    If you’re self-employed or earn income without tax withholding, this is the final due date for your 2024 estimated quarterly tax payment.

  • January 27, 2025 – Tax Season Begins
    The IRS officially starts accepting and processing federal tax returns for the 2024 tax year.

  • January 31, 2025 – Deadline for Employers to Send W-2 Forms
    Employers must send W-2 forms by this date, though you may receive yours later depending on mailing or electronic delivery.

  • January 31, 2025 – Deadline for Issuing Certain 1099 Forms
    Forms such as 1099-NEC, 1099-MISC, and 1099-K must be sent to those who earned income outside of traditional employment (e.g., independent contractors, gig workers, or investment earnings).

  • February 18, 2025 – Deadline to Reclaim Withholding Exemption
    If you claimed an exemption from tax withholding last year via Form W-4, you must submit a new form to maintain the exemption.

  • April 1, 2025 – First Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) Due
    If you turned 73 in 2024, this is the deadline to take your first required minimum distribution from your retirement accounts.

  • April 15, 2025 – Tax Day
    This is the deadline to file your 2024 tax return and pay any taxes owed to avoid penalties and interest.

  • April 15, 2025 – Deadline to Request a Tax Filing Extension
    If you need more time to file your tax return, submit Form 4868 by this date to extend your filing deadline to October 15, 2025. However, any taxes owed must still be paid by April 15 to avoid penalties.

  • April 15, 2025 – Final Day to Make 2024 IRA & HSA Contributions
    This is the last opportunity to contribute to an IRA or HSA for the 2024 tax year.

  • April 15, 2025 – 1st Quarter 2025 Estimated Tax Payment Due
    If you make quarterly estimated payments, the first payment for the 2025 tax year is due.

  • June 16, 2025 – 2nd Quarter 2025 Estimated Tax Payment Due
    The second estimated quarterly tax payment is due. Note that estimated tax payments are not always evenly spaced throughout the year.

  • September 15, 2025 – 3rd Quarter 2025 Estimated Tax Payment Due
    The third estimated tax payment for 2025 is due.

  • October 15, 2025 – Extended 2024 Tax Return Filing Deadline
    If you requested an extension in April, this is your final deadline to submit your 2024 tax return.

  • December 31, 2025 – Final RMD Deadline for 2025
    If you’re 73 or older, you must take your required minimum distribution for 2025 by this date to avoid penalties.

  • January 15, 2026 – 4th Quarter 2025 Estimated Tax Payment DueThis is the last estimated tax payment for 2025. Any unpaid taxes will be due when you file your 2025 return by the April 2026 deadline



Key 2025 Tax Dates For Businesses 
Important Tax Deadlines and Dates for Businesses, Partnerships, LLCs, C Corps, and S Corps
 

  • January 27, 2025 – Tax season officially begins.

  • January 31, 2025 – Employers must send W-2 forms to employees.

  • January 31, 2025 – Deadline to send certain 1099 forms.

  • March 17, 2025 – Tax returns are due for partnerships and S corporations. Businesses taxed as partnerships (including multi-member LLCs) and S corporations must file Form 1065 or Form 1120-S by this date if operating on a calendar year. If your business follows a fiscal year, your return is due on the 15th day of the third month after your tax year ends. For example, if your fiscal year runs from April 1 to March 31, your return is due June 16, 2025.

  • April 15, 2025 – C corporation tax returns are due. Calendar year C corporations must file Form 1120 by this date. If using a fiscal year, the return is due on the 15th day of the fourth month following the close of the fiscal year. For example, if your fiscal year runs from April 1 to March 31, your return is due July 15, 2025.

  • September 15, 2025 – Extended tax return deadline for partnerships and S corporations.

  • October 15, 2025 – Extended tax return deadline for C corporations.
